Experience

I've tutored off and on over the last 20 years, periodically on a full-time basis. At times I have worked for tutoring agencies, and I have worked full-time as a tutor for home-school students. The majority of my tutoring experience has been in Study Skills, Test Preparation (SAT, ACT, AP exams), Writing Skills, History, Sociology, Ancient Languages (Latin and Greek), and various levels of math (beginning through Calculus). My primary focus as a tutor is to teach the student the skills to become a better learner. Whether I'm tutoring in a language, writing, math, or anything else, I want to help the student learn how to become a better student in that subject. This involves reinforcing research skills, teaching the student what kinds of questions to ask, and developing better study habits. I also enjoy helping students develop a passion for the subject; in formal school environments, it is often difficult to help students develop a love of learning, since there are too many goals to accomplish during the day. I see my job as not only helping students learn their subjects and complete assignments, but providing them with the tools and passion to get the most out of their educational experiences.

Hobbies

I enjoy traveling, reading, hiking, and scuba. I've spent the last ten years living abroad (in Australia and Singapore) and have become much more interested in studying other cultures and learning to cook new and interesting foods. I now consider myself an expert in preparing Singaporean chicken rice, and I've developed a level of coffee snobbery that is only rivaled by Melbournians.
